Sixth Grade Current Events: Understanding the News

February 10, 2017

The goal of the sixth grade current events curriculum is to introduce students to the skills and terminology essential to understanding the news, particularly related to American government and politics. To that end, teachers recently created a “Women’s March Museum,” where students explored various “exhibits” in the classroom. The museum contained photographs, protest signs, tweets, “cat hats,” and video clips from the march. Students have also been learning about the three branches of government and conducting an experiment in which they balanced a book with one, two, and three markers to illustrate why three branches are necessary. These and other current events activities are helping students to become knowledgeable about local, national, and global events and to formulate and articulate informed opinions on events taking place at all levels.
