Mirrors & Windows is a 6th grade class that gives students extra practice with research skills and writing while exploring themes of identity and diversity. A “mirror” refers to a resource that reflects students’ own lived experiences and helps affirm their identity; a “window” is one that offers students a peek into someone else’s.
Students made art projects based on the work of an established artist they’d researched, and then created slideshows explaining how the work resonated with them (“mirror”) and what insight they gained (“window”) from learning about the artist’s life and work.
Weeks of research and creativity culminated in the Mirrors and Windows Gallery Walk, an exhibition of projects open to middle school museum-goers. Kudos to “museum curators” Jenny Armstrong and Austin Goins.
