The middle school was treated to a visit from children’s book author and illustrator Victoria Jamieson on Wednesday. The visit came about thanks to MMFS parent Kate Ruck (mom to 7th grader Josie and 9th grader Orion), who has been friends with the author since middle school. Victoria Jamieson is the author and illustrator of many books, including the best-selling and award-winning Roller Girl, and her latest, When Stars Are Scattered, a graphic novel co-written with Omar Mohamed. When Stars Are Scattered is about Omar’s childhood in the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya, after he and his younger brother fled the civil war in Somalia.
Victoria talked to the students about her inspirations and her creative process, and then she led them through a drawing exercise, reassuring them, “If you can write your name, you can draw.” She also offered advice about making art that doubles as advice for life: “Don’t worry if it’s not perfect. Make your art and share it. You’ve got stories to tell.”
