In the middle school, athletics are focused on traditional team sports. Soccer, basketball, and volleyball are each taught in a trimester, running parallel with other athletics.
Students in middle school physical education classes build strength, develop athletic skills, and increase fitness. Teachers and coaches take this opportunity to stress leadership, sportsmanship, and teamwork in a noncompetitive environment.
Middle school physical education/fitness classes meet twice weekly and primarily take place in the school gymnasium. During each season some of the skills taught are reflective of the sports in which we are competing. This gives all students the chance to try out different sports so that they can eventually join a team or just play for fun. Friday afternoon clubs are focused on the sport of the season.
Lightning team sports are a vibrant part of middle school life. Seventh and eighth graders are eligible to try out for the team. They compete in either the Middle School Athletic League (MSAL) or the Independent School Athletic League (ISAL). Competitive sports at MMFS are grounded in the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and the desire to improve oneself.
All games and practices for indoor sports take place at the school, and our stands are usually filled with excited families and supporters of our student athletes. Outdoor games take place at Brooklyn Bridge Park or other city parks. MMFS intramural teams compete against many mainstream schools, and our games are very competitive. Our athletes play fair and with integrity — we are a Quaker school even when competing.
