Students are learning about bias and inequality in a nine-week class on social justice. Taught by ES Assistant Director Franziska Laskaris, the class seeks to create an anti-bias environment by encouraging curiosity about others; creating an awareness of shared physical characteristics; developing an accurate (and developmentally appropriate) understanding of gender, race, cultural and physical abilities; and fostering awareness and critical thinking about bias. In one lesson, for example, students looked through magazines to identify ads with stereotypes or defined gender roles. In another, they traced each other onto large paper, mixed paint to match their skin color, and painted their posters to match themselves. The class is being taught to the youngest three classes and the Fell, Dunbar, Fox and Cuffe Rooms.
