Middle School

November was a busy month here at the middle school. We had basketball tryouts for our boys and girls Lighting teams. Our new squads have been announced and we look forward to a successful season! Please come to a Lightning game and support our teams. The energy in the gym during games is electrifying!!!!
Middle school students are taking part in the MMFS Annual Poetry Recital Contest. Students select a poem and memorize at least eight lines. They recite this poem with emotion and conviction to an esteemed panel of judges during the week of December 7th. Winners from each division are then invited to recite their poems at the elementary school winter performance. Our staff members have been reading their favorite poems aloud during Silent Meeting to help motivate our students.
Our annual community service day was held the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. On that day students brought in toiletries and snacks to share with shelter guests at a community dinner at the Brooklyn Meeting House and CHIPS in Park Slope. Eighth grade students supplemented the supplies by saving change from their lunch-out money. They saved $95.64 and used it to purchase more snacks. Sixth grade students sorted the supplies into categories and put them in decorated bags. They also made Thanksgiving signs and table decorations. While the sixth graders were hard at work on these projects, the seventh and eighth grade students completed their annual clean up at the Quaker Cemetery in Prospect Park. They worked for hours on end raking leaves and moving debris. Spring bulbs were also planted so daffodils will bloom in the spring. Members of the Brooklyn Meeting are always so appreciative of the work our students do for the shelter guests and at the cemetery.
Eighth grade students raised funds for their Costa Rica trip with a delicious bake sale. We had turkey cupcakes, pumpkin petit fours, chocolate chip cookies, fruity pebbles rice krispie treats, brownies and muffins. All the funds we raised will supplement the cost of the 8th grade trip to Costa Rica at the end of January. We raised over $300 and had a “sweet” afternoon.
Our Friday afternoon running club took an extra special run over the Brooklyn Bridge. The run was fueled by the students, who urged middle school teachers Wendee Lipnick, Cecily Moyer, and Melody Olsen to take this ambitious journey. Everyone made it across the bridge and had a delicious lunch once in Manhattan. Go Running Club!!
