LS Head Teacher Allie Paddock presented at this year’s National Council of Teachers of English conference in Anaheim, California. The topic: How the practice of remixing visual media offers students the opportunity to re-envision the world as they want it to be.
While co-presenters Laurie Rabinowitz, Assistant Professor at Skidmore College, and Amy Tondreau, Assistant Professor at University of Maryland, Baltimore County, discussed theory and pedagogical tools from a teacher education perspective, Allie demonstrated how critical visual literacy work can be applied in a classroom designed to support students with language based learning disabilities. She used examples from the curriculum she designed around this very subject as part of her master’s thesis, which she implemented with her 4th grade class last year.
