Convocation Officially Welcomes Head of School André Del Valle to MMFS

October 01, 2024

On a rainy Saturday we officially welcomed Head of School André Del Valle to the MMFS community at Convocation. Held at the beautiful Theater at City Tech, all lit up in green for MMFS, we were treated to exciting performances by Batalá, NYC’s premier, all-women, Black-led percussion ensemble. With Mark Doty serving as emcee, we heard from Board Clerk Larry Botel, Assistant Board Clerk María Torre, MMFS senior Jesse G-B and his mother, Janice, and from Middle School Dean of Students Suzanne Leake.

In one of the most moving parts of the program, MMFS senior Nkechi I, assisted by students Zarah H, Louisa P, and Sebastian R (filling in for an ailing Sasha W), presented André with three gifts to help him do his job:

  • a compass to help him find his way;
  • a lamp to light his path; and
  • two books–A Call to Conscience: The Landmark Speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bayard Rustin: A Legacy of Protest and Politics–to provide inspiration.

André also was gifted a compilation of video greetings from the community.

During his remarks, André shared the story of the path he took to get to MMFS and thanked some of the people who helped him along the way, especially his mother, wife, and daughters, who were all in the audience.

Thank you to everyone who came out to officially welcome André to our warm and wonderful community.
