Upper School
The upper school has been celebrating Latinx and Hispanic heritage in many different ways. You should check out the newly updated Cultural Research & Celebration Hub for Latinx and Hispanic Heritage. The former “Cultural Research & Celebration Club” is now a co-curricular called “Cultural Research & Celebration Fellows,” led by Head Spanish Teacher Vicki Muñoz-Lepore and Language Therapist Linda Jean-Mary. Thank you to CRC Fellow (and 11th grader) Nkechi Igwe for updating the site with “links to history, identity, terminology, media, cultural and advocacy organizations, spoken word, and literature that celebrate, honor, and explore Latin American histories and peoples.”
Last Friday, Head Music Teacher Taylor Watson brought his band, Son de Brooklyn, to MMFS for workshops with students from Heritage Spanish, Modern Band, Strings, and Jazz Band, followed by a performance in the courtyard. The six-piece group features members from different Spanish-speaking countries and specializes in creating festive grooves in the Afro-Spanish diaspora styles of son Cubano, salsa, merengue, bachata, rumba, and bolero.
