Upper School
Career Day is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn first-hand about a profession that they may be interested in. Professionals from all walks of life came to our upper school on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 to share their educational and professional journeys with our students. Middle Division Career Day will take place in the spring.
Students signed up to hear presenters speak based on their interest in the profession. Presenters, some of whom have learning issues (often undiagnosed), spoke with students for about 40 minutes in their classrooms. Presenters were very open about discussing challenges they faced. It was reassuring for our students to hear that adults who have achieved success may have had a difficult time in school. One presenter explained that seeing things differently than others has actually been a benefit in his life. Another credits his disability as the force behind knowing how to work hard, to listen well, and to use his social skills to build relationships.
Students were fully engaged and discussions were lively. Students came away energized, with interesting information and new ideas to think about. They compared notes and shared stories with each other afterwards.
We are very grateful to the following people who generously took time from their busy lives to spend time with our students – serving as role models – giving our students information, insights, and encouragement to pursue their own career paths.
Tiffany Baker is a multi-media designer, currently at CNNMoney. She has experience in web, logo, and branding.
Steven Hicks is a MMFS upper school basketball coach. He coached the upper school varsity basketball team to their first ever win in league play. Steven has more than 30 years experience coaching, including at several colleges. He is also a pastor.
Peter Hoffman, the proprietor of Back Forty, is a chef and restaurateur. He was a pioneer of using locally sourced ingredients at his earlier restaurant, Savoy, which he continues at Back Forty. Peter is an active member of the Slow Food movement. He is the parent of a MMFS student.
Peter Laughter is an entrepreneur. He is the co-founder and CEO of Wall Street Services. Wall Street Services provides temporary staffing to the financial services industry. Peter also works with young people to help them learn skills to be business leaders.
Robert Marino is an architect. He is an associate principal and studio leader at Perkins Eastman, a large international architectural firm. He has more than 30 years of experience as a project architect and project manager on a wide variety of commercial, hospitality, housing, and mixed-use projects. He is a parent of a MMFS alumnus.
Eve Omansky is an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). She is a MMFS alumna.
Dan Smulian is a lawyer and a professor at Brooklyn Law School. Among other responsibilities, he teaches the Safe Harbor Project, in which teams of law students represent individuals in a range of cases affecting their immigration status and entitlements in the United States.
Zoe Thomas is currently an IFLR Americas Reporter for Euromoney Institute Investor, a freelance journalist, writer, and photographer. She is a MMFS alumna.
